Forget that you are in the city. In the quiet and well-heeled neighborhood of Rotherbaum, amongst the rich foliage, on the shores of the reflective Alster Lake, The Fontenay Hamburg effortlessly unfolds itself like an extension of the landscape. The lake draws daily joggers, romantics as well as water sports aficionados that take up sailing and paddle boarding activity by heart. A 15-minute brisk walk will allow you to reach the old town and 10 minutes to Stephansplatz U-Bahn station. It’s close enough to explore the town yet still far-away from the frenzy and crowd.

CHARACTER & STYLE

The hotel is an epitome of the oriental concept of ‘Feng Shui’ with western sensibilities. The circular almost fluid design glides naturally exuding zen and a state of ‘being in the moment’. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the hotel has no back side view. Each room affords varying views of the city. A 27 meter high glass-walled atrium serves as the hotel’s centerpiece featuring fitted panels that looked like overlapping keyboards and light up in a rhythmic pattern. Within the contoured walls of the lobby, a secluded library can be found for a peaceful and cozy downtime afternoon reading.

THE ROOMS

Light is the most distinct characteristic of each 130 rooms including 17 suites. Aside from balconies serving as great outdoor spaces, the floor to ceiling windows allow elemental vibes to seep in gently. The sheer and black-out curtains offers varying lighting scenarios. The plush carpets set against the oak patterned parquet floor offer an uncompromised sophistication. Color schemes are warm and homely complementing the elegant décor and bespoke furniture like the sofa, lamps and desks. A selection of free drinks from the minibar and a coffee machine add a touch of pampering and practicality.

BEDTIME ETIQUETTE

Heated bathroom floors elevate the in-room pampering. Beds are relaxingly firm and comfortable topped with high-grade white cotton sheets and soft linens. The hotel panders to every guest pillow needs and demands. Expect to catch-up on some indulging afternoon siestas, perhaps a light snooze from to time or a full blown restful slumber – all the while being surrounded by modern comfort and luxury.

KEEPING IT GREEN

With its sustainable design, the hotel takes full advantage of nature and technology. It has systems in place to regulate temperature, heat recovery, water and energy consumption. The hotel uses 60% green electricity and injects eco initiatives like converting the inner courtyard to green spaces for plants and trees to thrive. 1. I always enjoy your hotel reviews as you introduce me to wonderful and unique accommodations in spectacular locations. I do love a peaceful and pampered space. I’m not sure if I’d spend more time in the library or on the terrace. This would be my pick for a couple of respite nights on a long trip.

  2. Love the look of the balconies, and how bright the rooms are. Although equally important that they have blackout curtains for a good sleep too. At first glance it seems further than I often go from the main city, but it actually isn’t a bad walk from what I can see, and might actually be a little quieter because of that. Lovely hotel, great review

  3. Now this is my type of place to stay. What a beautiful hotel and I love the rooftop infinity pool and the views from the bar are amazing. I’d definitely look at staying here.

    • The hotel oozes with Zen. I find the hotel a remarkable city oasis, surrounded by lush foliage and a meditative lake to boot. I have a feeling that could be your cuppa tea of hotel property. Serene, reflective and uber comfy.
      Sehr gut! 😉
