The road to Cómpeta is nothing much of a route but an act of faith. It twists and winds through steep folds of olive groves and almond trees that look unbothered while happily clinging to the mountainside. Each turn would reveal a glimpse of the distant sea, a solitary hamlet or a meadow of wild lavenders and rosemaries.
On one such bend, a herd of goats of all shapes and sizes halted our ascent. A slow-moving tide of horns and indifference and dozens of them in procession. Between the bleats and their bells that sang a bright metallic chorus, a wiry farmer in a straw hat appeared from behind.
“They think they own the road,” he said, resting his staff across his shoulders.
“Perhaps they are right,” I ruminated.
His grin revealed his gap-tooth dentures. “They were here before the cars, before the asphalt, and before me.” He cast a tender gaze at his herd as they ambled past us leaving dust in their wake. “The goats know more than we do.”
From a distance, I saw the valley shimmered in the late afternoon light, terraces of green climbing toward the horizon of gold and saffron, the scent of rosemary rising with the breeze. The landscape is alive. It’s as if watching the brief encounter between men and creatures.
When the herd finally moved on, the shepherd waved at us. “This is where the world of humanity ends,” he said, pointing down the road ahead of us, “and the goats begin.”
We waved back and drove away. With the bend now far behind us, I wasn’t entirely sure he was wrong... 𓂃✍🏻

We’re often enjoyed a road trip which has been scuppered (temporarily) by livestock or wildlife! It adds to the charm of the journey and it certainly seems as though the goats were in charge of the traffic that day. Competa sounds delightful, sign us up for supping wine whilst enjoying the mountain views. It has an eminently reachable location but clearly has rural charms. It definitely sounds like a place to savour.

You can’t beat a typical Andalucian white village. I’ve yet to make it to Cómpeta but from what I’ve seen I just know I’d love it! I love your encounter with the goat farmer – the one in our village probably thinks I’m mad as every time I see him (which is often) I’m taking photos of his goats! 😂
I’ve not heard of Competa but you definitely have my attention now. I love the white washed houses and the slower vibes. The picture with the mosaique bench/viewing platform has a touch of Gaudi, don’t you think? I was also wondering how you knew about Competa? Just found it whilst driving around or did you research beforehand? It would be a fantastic base to explore the rural area or just as a day trip from Malaga.

This looks like a perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed place to travel. Off the beaten track. A place I’ve never heard of but am inspired to visit. Enjoying a glass of wine and looking at the mountain view sounds ideal.
The cover photo had me ready to pack my bags immediately! I can feel the mountain breezes and imagine the sun’s warmth on my skin while sitting outside a bodega, enjoying a glass of wine and nibbling some tapas. I did a fair amount of exploration during a road trip last year, but missed this lovely town. I obviously need to return to the area and do more exploration.
