ÓRGIVA — The Art of Forgetting

Depending who you ask, Órgiva either sits or squats in a valley that often feels detached from time. The mountains around the village hold a kind of reticent patience, as if they have already seen every possible story play out and know how each one ends albeit all in slow motion.

I encountered them near the confluence of the Guadalfeo River — a group of bohemians living in their vans. Their humble abode looked like pieces of art installation of which the earth made for itself. They moved as if floating, and spoke softly with an air of unhurried certainty. One of them, a woman with ash-blonde hair and kind eyes, offered me tea brewed with wild thyme and mint.

“We’re not running away or escaping,” she said, as if answering a profound question that I came to ask. “We’re just remembering what the world sounded like before all the noise.”  

My phone rang and I felt a pang of shame. They led me to a rock and we sat there in silence. The river gurgled like it was in a state of trance, speaking to us. Around me, orange trees glowed in the midday light and the Sierra Nevada stretched out like a sweet promise.

“Take what you need from the quiet, but don’t try to own it.” Her last words before I left.

I didn’t understand it until later.

Órgiva seeps into you, not through excitement, but through the quiet insistence of its calm and acceptance... 𓂃✍🏻

Via Granada (closest city) Distance: ~55 km / Driving Time: ~40–45 min 🚗 (by car)

 

​Route: From Granada take the A-44 south toward Motril >> Exit at Lanjarón / La Alpujarra (Exit 164/175) >> Follow A-348 toward Órgiva.

 

​ALSA buses run between Estación de Autobuses de Granada and Órgiva with journey times around 🚌 1 h 35–1 h 45 min depending on schedule.
